Autism Answers for Home and School

The Autism Site has been developed too provide you with quality information on assisting children and young people with autism spectrum disorders to become as independent and fulfilled as possible. We believe the best way to achieve this goal is to provide a forum for families, caregivers, professionals and those with autism to share their experiences.

Site Manager - Sharon A. Mitchell, B.A., B.Ed., M.A.

Sharon looks at autism from both sides, as a parent and as a professional. She has a built-in resource - a son with Asperger’s who is currently attending university.

She has been involved in the field of special education for over twenty-five years as a Resource Room teacher, counselor and consultant. She’s also worked in a medical setting doing neuropsychological assessments.

Her current position is as a Special Ed Consultant and Coordinator in an amalgamated school district. As well, she is seconded by the provincial department of education to present workshops on working students with autism spectrum disorders and do individual consultations in schools. Parents, school personnel, social workers, day care staff, occupational therapists, counselors, psychologists, and speech/language pathologists, attend her workshops. She spoke at the National Conference for the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada on Asperger Syndrome and Nonverbal Learning Disabilities.

Sharon holds a B.A. in Psychology, a B.Ed. in Exceptional Children and an M.A. in Educational Leadership. Her Master’s thesis looked at long-term outcomes for students with Asperger’s Syndrome and autism and involved writing a self-help manual for ASD young adults.

While the academic training helps, she learns a lot from the shared experiences of workshop participants and from the parents and teachers she talks with almost daily about assisting young people with ASD. And, she learns from her son.

Along  with some of the autism field’s leading writers, Sharon is co-author of the new book, The Autism 101 Manual.Take a peek at http://www.autism101manual.com

She is also part of Autism Today’s Panel of Experts. Visit www.AutismToday.com and correspond with some of the world’s leading experts in the field of autism. While there, peruse the archives of stored articles on research and practices in autism or take advantage of the online courses. Check out the resources page or find a conference in your area.
